Unlike ordinary brushed DC motors that use armature windings for rotational commutation, brushless motors are motors that use electronic commutation and magnetic steel to rotate. Ordinary DC motors are commutated by carbon brushes. There are many disadvantages in carbon brush commutation:

1. Sparks generated by mechanical commutation cause commutator and brush friction, electromagnetic interference, large noise, and short life;

2 The structure is complex, the reliability is poor, and there are many faults, which require frequent maintenance.

3. Due to the existence of the commutator, the further decrease of the inertia of the rotor is limited, which affects the dynamic performance.

The naming of the brushless DC motor shows the characteristics of the motor: the performance of the motor is similar to that of the DC motor, and the motor has no carbon brush. The brushless motor achieves the purpose of continuous operation of the motor through electronic commutation.
The commutation mode of the brushless motor is divided into square wave and sine wave drive. For its position sensor
and control circuit, the square wave drive is relatively simple and inexpensive, and is widely used. At present, most of the brushless motors are driven by square waves, and the model motors currently on the market are all square wave driven.

Technical advantages of brushless motors:
1. Good controllability and wide speed range.
2. High reliability, long working life and no need for frequent maintenance.
3. High power factor, high work efficiency and high power density
.
Similarly, brushless DC motors also have certain technical disadvantages.
1. An electronic controller is required to work, which increases technical complexity and cost, and reduces reliability.
2. The permanent magnet material of the rotor limits the environment in which the motor is used, and is not suitable for high temperature environments.
3. There are obvious torque fluctuations, which limits the application of the motor in high-performance servo System
and low-speed ripple system.
